They're just very, very slow. Their clock speed is great but ... i don't know. My compusa-tech friend assures me that it's the 'quad-pumped' architecture that makes my p-4 celeron 2.4 perform about as well as a pentium III. In fact, i don't think even that is essential. -pipe puts all temp files in ram. Without -pipe, the files are stored on disk (/var/tmp/, i think, for emerges) and therefore you don't need a lot of memory.
