This would be better asked in a KDE user forum, but I'm just getting
Gentoo set up on a laptop and haven't found any KDE groups/lists yet.

Is there a way to have an app-launching icon appear on one or more of
the desktops but not on others? I did STFW, but I can't find anything
about it.

Have a look at 'apwal' : it doesn't do exactly what you request,
but it's a rather cute device for calling up icons when you want them.
I have it mapped to the left mouse button.

Thanks much; that's really neat. I've used xbindkeys to map
ctrl+rightclick to apwal. But I'd rather have it come up only when I
right click on the desktop; again I seem to be up against a lack of
configurability in KDE, which will only let me choose among various KDE
menus to bind to clicking on a desktop.

You can find all KDE-related lists on http://lists.kde.org.

AFAIK, that's not possible.

It is KDE 3.5.5. After install, I looked through all the control center
options, and I was impressed -- it's still a lot, but it seems much more
understandable than the last time I had a look, c. 3.2.x.

Heh, I did do that before settling on xbindkeys. Opening a menu to
then launch apwal was too much clicking for me. ;) When I am using the
mouse, my left hand is usually hanging out near the ctrl key anyway, so
binding to ctrl+rtclick is more comfortable than I though it would be.

Aha, thanks. I think after a day of usage, I am now an apwal
evangelist, so that's good to know. Thanks for all your help.

Looks like a cool feature for KDE 4... why don't you go there and
suggest them to implement it? :)

Why don't you?bugs.kde.org does accept wishlist items. ;-)

I am happy with the way it is since I rarely use desktop icons but stick to
the customised selection of apps on my panel and the menus.

Some will like your suggestion, some won't. So it would be yet another
configuration option. I don't know. Maybe, KDE's HCI people should decide.
