[gentoo-user] XF86AudioRaiseVolume does not work in KDE after updating to 3.5.3

Some weeks ago I updated my Desktop to 3.5.2 and after that the 
XF86AudioRaiseVolume button on my Logitech keyboard does increase the master 
volume. All the other Multimedia keys (XF86AudioLowerVolume, XF86AudioMute, 
XF86AudioPlay, ...) works ok and if I start xev I can see the 
XF86AudioRaiseVolume button event but nothing happens. I have even tried to 
set XF86AudioRaiseVolume as a shortcut to "Increase Volume of Master Channel" 
in Global settings of KMix but even that do not work.

Any suggestions what could be wrong?

Hi

For me it works. I can't tell you what the problem is, but you could try to 
make kde run the command 'amixer set Master 1+' whenever you press the 
XF86AudioRaiseVolume key using the input actions in kcontrol as a workaround.

Strange. Are you sure it's got something to do with the kde update? You could 
test if it is a kde problem by assigning the XF86AudioRaiseVolume to some 
event in a non-kde program and see if it works.

I have a Logitech keyboard and can only get those extra buttons to 
work using x11-misc/lineakd, x11-misc/lineak-xosdplugin, 
x11-misc/lineak-defaultplugin and x11-misc/lineak-kdeplugins.

You mean you upgraded from KDE 3.5.2 to 3.5.3?
Did you around the same time upgrade to modular Xorg (7.0)?

Interesting.  So xev sees the key, but KControl does nothing when 
you press it when trying to define a Shortcut?  And what happens 
when you also hold Ctrl or Shift?

What says the keyboard section in your /etx/X11/xorg.conf ?

Yes, from 3.5.2 to 3.5.3, and it was before the Xorg 7.0 update.

Sorry, my error I can define a shortcut in kcontrol but it never get executed.

Are you sure the XF86AudioRaiseVolume key broke immediately after 
the KDE upgrade and not only after the Xorg upgrade?  Because a 
week ago Remy Blank said that it was the upgrade to modular Xorg 
that broke some of his XF86 keys.

Okay.  But still, adding Ctrl or Shift to the definition does not 
make any difference?  XF86AudioRaiseVolume might somehow be doubly 
defined, but it's unlikely that it is so in combination with some 
modifier keys.

interesting.  What does 'setxkbmap -print' report?  And are there 
any errors (EE) in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?

Did you by any chance keep a backup of your ~/.kde dir from before 
the upgrades?

I'm quite shore that this was after the KDE upgrade and before the Xorg.

Same result (=no action) when used with Shift- or Ctrl- XF86AudioRaiseVolume.

At least that is wrong, shouldn't happen.  Googling shows this:

Dan, searching bugzilla for XF86Audio showed this:

XF86AudioRaiseVolume not working.

Strangely, the upgrade from kde-3.5.4 to 3.5.5 made all three sound 
buttons stop working for me.  KControl would indeed not accept any 
of the sound buttons when trying to define a shortcut, it would 
accept XF86Mail or XF86Search, for example, but not a XF86Audio*.

The way to get out of this is to go to KMix > Settings > Configure 
Global Shortcuts, and click Defaults -- this should set them all to 
None, otherwise manually select None for all three.  And click OK.  
Then configure the Global Shortcuts again: now that they are unset, 
the dialog will accept the keys.

Somehow the audio keys get caught before arriving at the 
key-definition dialog.  This is easily heard when trying to 
redefine Mute when it's already defined: instead of seeing 
XF86AudioMute as the key to be used, it mutes the sound.
