I've had no problem with Xorg-x11 7.1 + Nvidia-drivers-1.0.8774 .
I'm using Kernel 2.6.18 , so the 1st thing to try is a kernel update.
Make sure you check the ACPI section when configuring it
& recompile the Nvidia drivers for the new kernel.
