I have what is probably a stupid question.  I run an amd64 gentoo
system.  I find that lots of packages have in their KEYWORDS "amd64~".

Up until now, to remedy this when I want to attempt to use one of these
packages, I simply edit the ebuild, regenerate the digest, and do the
installation.  I feel sure there is an easier way around this - I've
read somewhere of being able to tell the system that I am not worried
about packages that haven't been tested on amd64 (thus the amd64~) -
does anyone know what file I need to edit and in what way to make this
work so I don't have to go through the hassle described above of editing
the ebuild, regenerating the digest and then installing the package?

Sure there is:

/etc/portage/package.keywords

where each line is the full package name that you want to allow
"~amd64" for your system. (in your case)
An example is:

x11-themes/gtk-engines-qt


Save it and then just run:

emerge -vuD world -p

and you'll se portage telling you that is going to bring in the latest
"keyworded" version of such package.

As an aside:

1. Some ebuilds are "masked packages". Whilst the chances of them being
functional are *considerably smaller* than if they are marked ~amd64, if you
REALLY must use them you can do so by putting their names into
"/etc/portage/package.unmask" in a similar format to the above.

2. Whilst I appreciate the courtesy (!), posts are more likely to stand out,
and therefore be read, if they have a more "on-topic" subject line than
"hello", or some such. For example, a better one for this thread might be
"how to unmask packages?" or even just "amd64?".

In addition, some anti-spam software *might* throw away messages like ones
which have a subject line "hello," when they otherwise might catch the
attention of someone able and willing to help you.

Hear hear. I routinely ignore posts with vague topics like "hello" or "can i
ask a question" or even "i have a problem". I get a couple hundred messsages a
day, and I filter on subjects. If the original poster can't be bothered to
summarize the post in the subject line, well then, I probably won't read it.

The only reason I'm reading this post is by accident :-)

I do recognize that it's a learned skill, and I appreciate replies like A.R.'s
to help educate newcomers. I might be accused of putting too much info in my
subject, but I figure it's helpful to those who wish to skip it.

Good luck everyone, in finding the posts you wish, and the answers to your
questions.

x11-themes/gtk-engines-qt works too. Adding a package without keyword
will imply unstable host arch (cf manpage) :

              package.keywords
                     Per-package KEYWORDS.  Useful for mixing unstable
packages in with a normally stable  machine  or  vice  versa.
                     This will allow you to augment ACCEPT_KEYWORDS
for a single package.

                     Note: There are two special KEYWORDS to help out here:
                     *  Match any stable KEYWORD
                     ~* Match any unstable KEYWORD

                     Format:
                     - comments begin with #
                     - one DEPEND atom per line followed by additional KEYWORDS
                     - lines without any KEYWORDS imply unstable host arch

                     media-video/mplayer -~x86
                     # always use unstable netcat
                     net-analyzer/netcat

It's ~amd64, not amd64~. The way to set this system-wide is to set
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" in /etc/make.conf.

Just to clarify the point: putting individual packages in package.keywordsor
package.unmask allows you to use those individual, named, masked packages on
a system that wouldn't normally accept them; putting
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" makes the system pull in masked packages (rather
than unmasked ones) by default.

Yes, but it you look at the original question, as quoted above, it looks
like John wants testing packages system-wide.

It makes the system pull in testing keyworded packages (not hard masked
ones) but that's what was asked for. If you have more than a few packages
in /etc/portage/package.keywords, you may be better off with a completely
testing system.

I looked at gentoo about 2 years back when I wanted to switch from
Mandrake, I went with Mepis and realy liked 3.3 but 3.4-3 doesn't seem as
good. Don't like how they changed the reopositories. So I thought I'd look
to gentoo again, and am please to see they're really making progress.
Looks like there's a live cd with a graphical install from what I've read.


I remember asking about a graphical frountend [like synaptit in Mepis] and
was told "we're working on it." How's it coming?

I see it still leans heavly on Gnome but a KDE version is on it's way,
that will help with popularity. 

I have a Celleron 2.9 gig 80 gig hd X 2 and 160 gig sata Diamond Stealth
P90 nvidia fx 5200 video, and winsurf tv card that likes to lock my systom
up grrrr and dsl. 

Will the dvd have a ton of stuff? I see the live cd is only 200 meg, that
seems kinda small. Be nice to see xvkbd in it for people who can't use
their hands well.

Nice.

I think it would be an excellent idea to ban attachments
all together from this list. This would also do away with
all that HTML junk....

Oh, pardon me, I must have skipped a step. When I
registered, there was no step showing the allowed
MUAs. Jarry, do you know since when this has been
changed? I'd be interested to know.
