Hello,

I have an old AMD-K6 200MHz system with 196 M of ram that I'd like
to make it into a DNS primary server. I've tried the x86 livedCD 2006.1
to install, but after trying to load the image, it just reboots.
I ran memtests for a very long period of time and the ram looks fine.
Indeed Knoppix 5.0 boots very slowly, but just fine and runs a full
gnome interface, slowly but correctly, so I know the Ram/cpu is fine.

What's the best install CD to use to get this k6-200MHz machine installed?
It will not be running X so maybe an older minimal CD is more friendly to old
amd K6? maybe the x86 2006.1 liveCD is not the best choice?

Suggestions are most welcome.

James

OK, this was going to be my next attempt....
Confusing, because I have a Pentium Pro 200MHz that is
i686 (CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu")
with this info from /proc/cpuinfo:
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 mtrr pge mca cmov

> Does this mean he can't use glibc-2.4? Or what should he do with CHOST
> (stage3-x86 sets it to i386...)?

Hmmm. Good point.
The Pentium Pro mentioned above is stopped during the upgrade of
glibc 2.4. It told me to add "nptl nptlonly" to the USE flags.
I did and issued 'emerge --resume". Hopefully this one makes it to
glibc-2.4 and gcc-4.1 ?

So what should I set as the CHOST for an amd-K6 arch machine?
Any other K6 settings I should select during the 2006.1 minimal CD
installation?

Anything any different in the make.conf file? ( O2, pipe, etc etc?)

A deeper question is should I plan on migrating my older machines
Pentium pro and amd k6 to another linux/bsd distro or will Gentoo
maintain a solution for these older arch's? Maybee Gentoo embedded
is the way to go with older arch's?

Have to lookup at home. I can post my make.conf tomorrow.

Just realised that there is a stage3-i586-...tar.bz2. For new installs on amd
K6 I assume that would be more appropriate than stage3-x86... For existing
installs I assume that the same procedure applies for changing CHOST to i586
as for changing to i686 as discussed in order threads on this list... Maybe
someone will elaborate on that.

Hello Rumen,

Well, I used 'install-x86-minimal-2006.1.iso' and it ran for a while
before hanging. Here are the last few steps after the keymap was
selected by default:
Mounting squashfs filesystem
Copying read-write image contents to tmpfs
No cdupdate.sh script found, skipping...
Booting (initramfs)...

<< hung >>

either the arch is incompatible or it does not like the ram (192 MB)...?

thoughts and ideas?

James

Hello Dirk,

That'd be great. I tried with both the gentoo and the 'gentoo-nofb'
kernels, but, it hung at the identical, aforementioned, sequence...

Your entire make.conf file on the amd k6 would be useful,
as well as the version/status of make.profile, glibc can gcc recent upgrades
and any issue you have found, would also be of interest to me.

Hello Bo,

At the risk of sounding redundant (maybe simple minded)

Which 2006.1 iso or bz2 file do I use?
I already tried this and it hung:
install-x86-minimal-2006.1.iso

So are you suggesing I try this file:
stage1-x86-2006.1.tar.bz2
or
stage3-x86-uclibc-2005.0.tar.bz2 <embedded>
or
stage3-x86-selinux-20050726.tar.bz2 <x86-hardened>

google turns up empty looking for:
stage3-i586-2006.1.tar.bz2

???

Yeah, sorry I was looking at 2006.0.

If I remember right, I used the 2006.0 minimal CD. And, I always start from
stage1.

My make.conf is attached (note that I'm running "~x86"). Profile is 2006.1,
gcc is 4.1.1, glibc 2.4, kernel 2.6.17.11 (vanilla). No issues so far,
currently compiling KDE :-)

Bye...

I have something that may be of help. I did a similar install on a K6-2
500mhz machine and the 2006.x livecds would not work, it would hang at the
same point. Fortunately I had some older Gentoo install discs and looked
through them until I found one that worked: 2004.1 r3 I think. I'll have
to look when I get home. I did some quick searches and couldn't find any
ISOs for that disc, so I can make an ISO from the disc (I think it's a
minimal install cd) and get it to you somehow.

I bet the 2004.1 install disc, which google returns some mirrors for, will
work. First result should give you what you need. Hope it helps.

Yes, I think this is the best solution. That way it'll have profile
2006.1
gcc4.1+ and libc2.4+. There are surely going to be folks that want to
install
old machines for firewalls, dns servers and such where hopefully the
gentoo-devs
will not abandon the older hardware? If they do, we'll have to migrate to
gentoo-embedded (ulibc) or to another distro. If you can put up a bz2 file
containing the iso, let me know and I'll download it and give it a shot.....

I do not think this will have the 2006.1 profile, gcc 4.1+
gloibc2.4+ etc etc

Hi Rumen,

I used gentoo-nofb for the kernel option but no other
(removal) options.

OK, I'll give it a whirl, using x86-minimal-2006.1.iso

OK, looking at:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2006.1/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2

Do have you any specific suggestions?

acpi=off

Hi James,
Quite no experience (no need) with kernel-boot options, but just some
suggestions:
acpi=off
doapm (requires acpi=off) - IMHO optional
hda=stroke (older BIOS hard-disk handling)
ide=nodma (just to be safe when installing)
noapic (caused problems on older HW)
nodetect (skip any errors while detecting HW) - have to know all your HW
check other noXXXX options, which only disable selected features
nolapic
scandelay
scandelay=X (X seconds)
All the options are in install disk root's dir in README.txt
