Hi!
I upgrade to new xorg 7.0 and I lost my keyboard configuration: my
layout is german (base version with deadkeys).
Now I can't do more all accent vocals (like è) and some symbols (likes @
and all ceated with control+ or alt+).
What's it happened from 6.8 to 7.0? How must I set it?
My xorg.conf is by xorgconfig generated, and I have:
Section "InputDevice"

    Identifier "Keyboard1"
    Driver "kbd"

   Option "Protocol" "Xqueue"

    Option "AutoRepeat" "500 30"

    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "de"

EndSection

Thanks, Luigi

Try this, for the Right Alt key to get you into the level 3 stuff (á, ë,
etc)

Option "XkbOptions" "lv3:ralt_switch"

If you want the various keys that can be put there instead of
ralt_switch, run this:

grep xkb_sym /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/level3

Thanks,
Donnie

I tried it... I don't understand my layout! Now I have but it's in the
ü! I had now [] not in the 7 and 8 but on ö and ä.
I'm a little bit confused...

So the lv3 stuff works something like this:

alt+; then letter gives right accented letter
alt+[ then letter gives umlauted letter
alt+] then letter gives tilded letter
alt+' then letter gives hatted letter

There's a different set called compose rather than lv3 that will give
you "composed" things, compose+letter then ' gives accented letter, etc.
It's sort of a more logical model. Look in
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/compose for "xkb_symbols" instead for its
possible buttons.

Thanks,
Donnie

It doesn't work!

I don't understand, why if it's worked today (with xorg 6.8) now doens't
work more? How can I set like before?
It must be a file that overwrite the xorg.conf configuration...

You restarted X after adding the lv3 thing to xorg.conf?

You can try this to avoid restarting X:

setxkbmap -layout de -option "compose:menu,lv3:ralt_switch"

That will set up things so composing uses the menu (windows) key, and
level3 uses right alt.

The XKB setup changed significantly between 6.8 and 7.0 -- lots of
things that used to work no longer do. You need to figure out the new
way to do whatever you used to do.

Thanks,
Donnie

Yes I did, I tried all your config files... Nothing works...

Probably I found the problem:
# setxkbmap -layout de -option "compose:menu,lv3:ralt_switch"
Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property
Use defaults: rules - 'xorg' model - 'pc101' layout - 'us'
Error loading new keyboard description

What does it means? I generated the default config file with the new
xorgconfig... It must write already the right rules...

Mmh, if it is worst as before, I propose to come back to old system :-)

Googling for that line shows these threads:

http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/freenx-knx/2006-June/003552.html
http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/2004-05/msg00041.html
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2004-September/008855.html

The first one says that it is some error in Xorg itself, fixed in
more recent versions.

The second one suggests that you may have a mistaken symlink
somewhere as a result of downgrading.

The last one found this as a workaround:
setxkbmap -keycodes "xfree86" -types "default" -symbols "en_US(pc105)+de" -geometry "pc(pc102)"

> What does it means? I generated the default config file with the
> new xorgconfig... It must write already the right rules...

Please post the relevant section of your xorg.conf again, plus the
output of 'setxkbmap -print'.

If all else fails, start looking for old symlinks. Look
under /usr/lib/X11/xkb, or use equery to see where the files of
setxkbmap get installed.

Comment all of these out, then try experimenting again with
setxkmap.

I had no old symllinks... I searched them... I tried all what it was

I did it, no changes in output (same for setxkbmap too!)
My question is: how is it possible that the package is marked stable if
there is a bug like it? In a your link says that the problem is solved
in the 7.1 and no patch for the 7.0? Very strange...
I have no idea more...

Okay. What says 'grep -A2 Option /var/log/Xorg.0.log' ?

Maybe because you're the first one to run into it? Since probably
few people do this upgrade-downgrade-upgrade cycle. Maybe you made
a small mistake somewhere along the way? Maybe you had some
package still masked for some reason, or forgot to unmask another?

> In a your link says that the

Probably there is no problem, just some files that for some reason
went missing, something that's cured by a reinstallation of the
affected package or packages.

So, do a 'genlop --list --date 5 days ago', or something similar, to
find out which packages got emerged for the upgrade of Xorg, and
then start re-emerging those (not by version number, but by name),
one by one, and keep restarting X to see when it gets fixed.

nationality of the keyboard? It should fail too, but one never
knows.

I waited until the stable version of xorg: I tried it some time ago and
I had the same problem, and after it I had problem with downgrade: I
installed the system another time... Now I didn't up-down-update xorg,

I didn't reinstall it, only the normal emerge -uD world comand

I'll try it

I use kde and I tried that option... It doesn't work!

Okay. Just in case, what say 'grep "^(EE)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log'
and 'grep "^(WW)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log'. And better not snip things
that may seem irrelevant.

And the output of 'locate *xk*de'. (If you don't have locate,
'emerge slocate' and 'updatedb', then the command again.)

> I didn't reinstall it, only the normal emerge -uD world comand

You're saying that for the upgrade from xorg-6.8.2 to 7.0 you didn't
remove the /usr/lib/X11/xkb dir? You didn't follow
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml ?

You probably found http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-426483.html
and http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113108 by now.

So try:

# ln -snf ../../share/X11/xkb /usr/lib/X11/xkb

You mean you tried modular xorg-7.0 when the ebuilds were still
marked as unstable?

You mean that the problem remained after you downgraded to
xorg-6.8.2?

Do you mean that you reinstalled xorg-6.8.2 again? Or that you
reinstalled the whole of Gentoo? Please be more precise in your
descriptions.

Yes, but I didn't understand how to set the new one. It seems (from the
name) as the old driver!

Yes, after a first trial I prefered to have a working computer than
fight with the keyboard too(I have a lot of hardware that doesn't
work!)

Yes, when it was masked (first time) and when it was in testing

No, it means that I didn't downgrade to xorg-6.8.2! Now I did it and
today I just retry to install xorg-7.0

No, I reinstalled the entire gentoo, but I had other problem too: a
emerge -e world was enough to solve most of them!

When I restarted X, X crashed!
I had to downgrade to xorg-6.8.2! Now I try to set from the session on
internet about if kdm doesn't work

So you had a "de" map, and in the right place. So that wasn't the
problem.

It's a command, to be executed as root (that's what the "#" means),
it links the old place of keyboard maps to the new one. But it
seems you have bigger problems now than just an unwilling keyboard.

I didn't understand from where it should be: a local path means that I
am in a directory and not in / I tried it now... It's works! Thanks!

All the old trials were without restarting the boot service xdm, after
restarting I couldn't start it again.
I had simple no keyboard or mouse, the screen stays black and the only
action possible is to restart all.
The Xorg.0.log says no error.
If you want I can send it.

The target is a relative path, but the placement of the link is
given as an absolute path. No need to be anywhere special.

Sorry, I delete some characters... I used your link!

It solved the keyboard layout, but I have the boot service start problem
yet.

In this moment I used a xorg-x11-7.0 but the xdm is started with
xorg-x11-6.8.2.
I do a revdep-rebuild, and I want to try to restart the xdm service
after it.
If it doesn't work, I must come back to xorg-x11-6.8.2 again!

That symlink shouldn't be necessary, as far as I know. That you
need it shows something is wrong with the way you've installed
modular Xorg.

Hm? Your xdm belongs to xorg-x11-6.8.2? You did not uninstall all
of xorg-x11-6.8.2 before merging modular Xorg? What does 'equery
belongs xdm' say? Maybe you just need to emerge or re-emerge xdm?

I think so too! What must I do? An emerge -e world?

Yes, I uninstall all, but by X (from a KDE session), if I logout and
login is all right, if I restart the server doesn't work more.
I install modular X from the meta packages (emerge xorg-x11 x11) and in
the list is xdm already there.
I really don't know... and each try need a lot of time (each time that x
doesn't start more I must reinstall the xorg-x11-6.8.2-r8 and update
again).

No. But it's high time now to show us an 'emerge --info'.

Okay. But what does 'equery belongs xdm' say? You really seem to
have trouble reading and following instructions.

When you try it again, maybe move /etc/X11 out of the way before
starting to emerge modular Xorg. Maybe exit from X too before
starting that emerge.

I tried that system: it works a little bit... What does it mean? I have
now a working keyboard, but I can't set a config file (that means no
dri).
In fact if I prepare a xorg.conf (it is the same a old one or a new one
made with xorgconfig), the problem stays (no response at xdm service
starting). Without it, xdm starts as usual!
Have you a idea?
Thanks a lot,
Luigi

Sorry, I mixed all things, sometime I already tried something, sometime
I don't understand what it means...

I did it. I found that the xorg.conf doesn't work. If I remove it, the X
server starts good, if I create one of them (xorgconfig, X -configure,
the xorg-x11-6.8.X one), X doesn't start correctly.
Of corse, without xorg.conf I can't use dpms and dri...
Someone can send me a working generic xorg.conf for xorg-x11-7.0? With
generic options (mouse imps/2, german layout keyboard)?
I want to start from him and configure the right options...
Thanks,
Luigi

When you're asked what something says, you are supposed to post the
results, no matter whether you think it's important or not.

Then ask.

What does that mean? You're being far too vague. Does all of KDE
or Gnome or fluxbox or whatever you use work?

Grrr... _What_ is going wrong? What are the exact errors?

Also, you were asked for the output of 'emerge --info'. _Post_ it.
Plus the _whole_ of the failing xorg.conf.

Sorry, I post the results, but it was probably no clear what I'd say!

That means, that if I remove the xorg.conf from /etc/X11 and I
use /etc/init.d/xdm start, X starts. If I put a general, or personal
xorg.conf, when I use /etc/init.d/xdm start I see a black screen and
keyboard and mouse are dead. I must reboot the computer.

Nothing! In /var/log/Xorg.0.log I read no errors! What it's the problem!

Sorry, I post 2 times last email and the emerge --info was in the first
one! I generated 2 xorg.conf with xorgconfig and Xorg -configure, both
don't work (always black screen), the 2nd one works on
xorg-x11-6.8.2-r8.

Hi all!
Ok, I open the thread again... I'm so sorry!
So, I update my gentoo from xorg-6.8.2-r8 to xorg-7.0-r1 with a lot of
problems.
I solved almost all of them thanks to you (and especially Benno who had
enough patience with me).
I found a very annoience problem in new xorg: if I enable the glx module
on /etc/X11/xorg.conf, my computer chashes (blank on monitor, no
keyboard and mouse), without it, xorg starts with all my possible
configuration files.
Now, I need glx (to use opengl for jahshaka).
I found no uswful info in /var/log/Xorg.0.log no errors!
I use xorg drivers on my ati radeon card.
I post my xorg.conf : I hope that it can be useful.
I generate it with Xorg -configure command.
