If you don't need cups 1.2.* then I think the path of least resistance is t= o=20 downgrade your cups to 1.1.* I found this: http://packages.gentoo.org/ebuilds/?cups-1.2.1-r2 which although cryptic seems to imply some sort of config change between 1.= 1=20 and 1.2 that requires some symlinks.
