Hi everybody,

today I've updated to portage 2.1 and everything works fine. I'm setting a
chroot and this are the steps I've take:

1-Downloaded stage2-i686-2006.0.tar.bz2
2-Create a partition with ext3
3-tar xvjpf stage2-i686-2006.0.tar.bz2
4-mkdir usr/portage
5-mount my portage partition mount /dev/hda9 usr/portage
6-mount proc and dev
7-chroot, env-update, source /etc/profile
8-emerge system
9-stop it after update portage
10-emerge --metadata
11-emerge -pvK system

Now I'm getting some packages with the following output

[binary U ] sys-devel/flex-2.5.33-r1 [2.5.4a-r6] USE="nls% -static"
[binary U ] sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r1 [3.4.4-r1] USE="doc% fortran*
gtk* nls -bootstrap* -boundschecking -build -gcj -hardened -ip28
-ip32r10k% -multislot -nocxx -nopie -nossp -objc -vanilla"

note those % like nls% and ip32r10k%. Portage "paint" them in
yellow. In my main system this doesn't happen.

AFAIK, the step that takes you from stage2 to stage3 is emerge system.
Since I already have a system where to take the packages from, I try to
save some donwloading using stage2.

I copy my main system's /etc/make.conf to this chroot.

Why am I getting that output? What does it means?

Best regards

It's a new feature of portage-2.1

(straight from the emerge man page)

[ebuild U ] sys-devel/distcc-2.16 [2.13-r1] USE=ipv6* -gtk -qt%
(snip...)
The percent sign following qt indicates that the qt option has been added to
the package since it was last installed.

Dear gentooers,

I have 2 strange portage behavior since I updated portage a few days ago.

First, It seems portage cannot find server anymore to update the portage
tree.
Portage freezes (in fact it doesn't do anything) and says: Checking
server timestamp...
I can still update by using emerge-websync so this problem is not
critical....yet!

The second issue I experience is that I cannot update my system because
I have 2 ebuilds that block the entire update.
I've already seen this issue once and I found a solution by masking one
of the blocking ebuild so I tried this time but the update cannot be
done anyway.
This problem is much more critical for me since I can't update my system
anymore !
Here is the output of an " emerge -pvuDt world"

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Unmerge pam-login because shadow does that now. emerge shadow
IMMEDIATELY after you unmerge though or you can't get back in. This is
something that everyone has been through I guess. I did too.

I guess you need to unmerge libutemper too. I seem to recall doing
that. May better wait to make sure.

Hope that helps.

Hello Yann,

you should:

1. unmask the packages you masked
2. emerge --unmerge pam-login
3. emerge --oneshot shadow
4. emerge --unmerge utempter
5. emerge -avDu world

IMPORTANT: Do NOT log out before step 3. If you logout after unmerging
pam-login you will NOT be able to login again until you emerge shadow.

That should fix the blocking problem. pam-login has now been merged into
shadow, so it is no longer needed. utempter..no idea what happened but
it seems to have changed it's name.

As for the rsync issue: Have you tried using a different rsync server?
Maybe you should use one of the generic ones like

SYNC="rsync://rsync.de.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

Hope this helps,
JP

Of course he should make sure to run etc-update, dispatch-conf or cfg-update
before logging out too..

I did that quite some time ago... back when I dumped PAM entirely<g>.

How's that work? What do you use for login and such? Is it more secure
or just different?

Thanks

Just like everybody else is doing now, I unmerged pam-login and
emerged shadow. shadow has always been able to handle logins on its
own. I also set "-pam" in USE, and emerged deep and newuse to rebuild
all the apps that had built with linkages to pam libs. For good
measure, I manually masked out pam libs back then.

> Is it more secure or just different?

Running without pam is arguably slightly less secure... if you're
running a server that has multiple users logging in to the shell. For a
home user like me who is the only person logging on to their machine,
pam is major overkill. I personally feel that pam should be an option
in the same way as NSA SELinux. It's more secure, but it's also more
work.

And, yes, running without pam is different. I had used linux for 4
years (Redhat, Debian, and CRUX) before switching to Gentoo, and had
never used pam. I ran into a lot of situations with services... "You
set up the access permissions in *WHAT* file?", at times bordering on
the Firesign Theatre album title "Everything You Know Is Wrong".

I was used to running without pam, and running with pam was an extra
learning curve, on top of the Gentoo learning curve. If you're
comfortable with pam, by all means stay with it. You'd probably have to
re-learn how to configure your services to dump pam, just like I had to
re-learn how to configure my services to use pam. Whatever you're
comfortable with.
