[gentoo-user] ssh2 and xover LAN

Hi everybody,

Anybody got this working between two PCs and can tell
me how to edit the conf files?

The NICs are found, the modules are loaded, the net is
up and both PCs can ping each other. But transferring
files fails.

FWIW tcpdump indicates the two PCs are aware of each
other.

ssh2 is probably overkill since security is not an
issue but ftp didn't work either.

yea sounds like it, however, ping uses ICMP and file transfer 
applications normally use TCP
i have had one case where a computer could ping stuff but nothing else 
because the tcp stacked was messed up and only icmp was working...
was a winXP box tho lol ..... !

Did the OP try something like:

scp -p -v -c blowfish /<local_box_path_to_file>
remote_user_name@192.168.0.3:/mnt/hda5/

The above assumes:
1. Blowfish encryption for faster transfers
2. <local_box_path_to_file> would be something like /home/fred/file.txt
3. 192.168.0.3 is the IP address of the remote box.  Check with your
router or do a ifconfig -a on the remote box to see what IP address it
has.  If you have DNS resolution working you can always use host names
instead of IP addresses.
4. scp, sftp, ssh will only work if your have started sshd on the
remote box (rc-update -a sshd default).  Once you're done remove sshd
from the default level for security purposes, unless you have secured
you machine adequately (e.g. no direct root logins, different port to
22, etc. - read the man pages)

Then why on earth don't you quote actually _useful_ data for us to help
you, i.e. the command you issued when you get that error?

May it even be possible that you don't use openssh's scp (I didn't
manage to reproduce such debug output you've cited)? You've neither
specified your client and server software... Trying to help you under
these circumstances is rather pointless.

Maxim, I think your english parser is broken.  Hwh, like everyone else
trying to help you, asked you to post the actual command you ran that
produced the output you posted.  That sure as hell isn't the quoted
command, because 192.168.0.3 and "<local_box_path_to_file> doesn't
appear in the output.

I think you'll find that most people use the programs from openssh.  I
would suggest removing net-misc/ssh (again, assuming this is what you
mean by "ssh2", since there is no ssh2 ebuild in the tree) and
re-merging openssh.

And what's this all got to do with ftp? All I ever
wanted to do was ftp files from one PC to another.
I've done it before. Very simple. I'd enter ftp
192.168.0.2(the address of the other box) at the
prompt on one box and find myself sitting at the door
to the home dir of the other box. Then I could use the
send command to pass over a file. IIRC there was never
any need for openssh or any kind of ssh.

Nothing at all.  But you were not running an ftp _server_ on the
machine you were trying to connect to.  I think it has already been
answered that the 'ftp' command is a client, and needs a server to
connect to.

So on the other machine, you need a server.  There are several in
portage: net-ftp/ftpd, net-ftp/proftpd are probaby the most popular,
and thus if you have problems or questions the most likely that people
will be able to help you with.

If the default configuration of the ftp server doesn't work for your
needs however, you will need to reconfigure it.  This is no more
difficult than other servers, but will require reading some
documentation, howto's, etc.

However ssh is quite a bit easier, because the default configuration
is quite usable for most tasks.  You still need a server on the other
machine (the commands 'ssh' and 'scp' are clients), but that just
means merging openssh there as well, and running '/etc/init.d/sshd
start'.

This will be necessary on the server machine to restart the ssh server
in the case where it already exists.

You can ignore the rest of this output if you use the default
configuration files.  Actually, since you don't care about security
here at all, you can ignore it completely.

~The only way someone is going to be able to help you is if they
understand the problem.Otherwise they will only be guessing, which will
waste their time and yours. In order to understand the problem, they need
to know exactly what you did, and exactly the responses you got. "I tried
everything and it did not work" provides no useful information. Try the
commands suggested, then cut and paste the command and its output.
Telling us you ran the command is not enough, you may have typed it
incorrectly. for example, "ls -l" and "ls -1" are both valid but
different commands, but they look the same in some fonts, so don't
retype, paste.

Insulting people is a good way to make sure they don't help you, but so
is saying nothing. So if you want no help, I suggest the latter course
of action, it is less trouble for everyone. If you really do want people
to help you, give them the facts they need to do so in an informed way.

Basically, connection refused. 

As far as the logs went, there were none! There was a
bunch of files that were supposed to be installed
under /etc, according to the man page, which didn't
appear. But emerge went smoothly. Except I was puzzled
that I had to emerge ftpd seperately. Emerge -pv ftp
didn't mention it. When I ran ftpd -D it would not
start but there wasn't any record of why not anywhere
that I could find. There was no sign that anything was
wrong; when I entered the command, the cursor just
went to the next line without a whimper. But ps -a
told the tale.

generally transfers myfile into the home directory of otheruser on the
machine another.computer.name.

The word is "terse". If anything I have been too
terse. It's a bad habit of mine. I eschew, abhor and

I've just checked it over. The last entry from Mick
never reached my box.

For Mick's benefit I used a variation of this command

scp -p -v -c blowfish /<local_box_path_to_file> 

to get that "odd" output. But then I said that
already.
