Hi all,
on a new install w/2.6.15 kernel on an i586(K6-2) box
I get an ugly red message on boot:
"Cannot default to dhcp, no dhcp module loaded, no
config for eth0...net mount was not started"
I use dialup, the ethernet card, a 3com59x will be
used with a crossover cable and ftp to another box, an
AMD Sempron running 2.6.12.
I left the /etc/conf.d/(init.d?)net on both machines
UN-edited but only get the error message on the new
install on the i586.
How do get my new system to turn off this error?
-mw

if you put something for eth0 in /etc/conf.d/net (look at the
net.example and read the docs for syntaxes), it will stop trying to
use dhcp. if there's no config for an interface, it tries to use
dhcp, but during your install, you failed to emerge dhcpcd.

That file states that it will use DHCP unless you edit it to use static
addresses.

OK, I edited the net file on *both* machines
identically, like so:
# For a static configuration, use something like this
# (They all do exactly the same thing btw)
config_eth0=( "192.168.0.2/24" )
config_eth0=( "192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0" )
Now, the older box(K6) with the new install(2.6.15)
boots without error finds the NIC and sets up the
network. ifconfig reveals all is cool.
But the newer box(Sempron) with the
earlier(2.6.12)kernel finds the on-board NIC but
doesn't set up the net nor give any errors. ifconfig
shows only the loop device is operational. The correct
module, forcedeth, *is* installed

okay, so is there a symlink from /etc/init.d/net.lo to /etc/init.d/
net.eth0? If there is, what happens when you issue "/etc/init.d/
net.eth0 start" as root? if there's not, make it, then issue the
command mentioned previously. be nice to be tailing /var/log/
messages at the time you do that.

have you put net.eth0 in the runlevel?
rc-update add net.eth0 default
