My attitude to KDE and GNOME is "The Pox on both your houses". They have nice apps like KOffice and "Gnome Office "Gimp, Gnumeric, AbiWord, etc. I run the apps I need and emerge pulls in any necessary dependancies. I've been using x11-misc/fbpanel as my dashboard app. It lacks only one item, namely that it doesn't autohide. Also, it doesn't show up in the task list, so I couldn't {ALT-TAB} to it if it wasn't set to be "always on top". Is there a simple dashboard/panel, like fbpanel but with autohide? I tried "emerge --pretend gnome-panel", and it seems to want to build most of GNOME as dependancies... These are the packages that I would merge, in order: Calculating dependencies ...done!
