Kmail is broken after cleaning out old kde versions (3.1-3.4) starting it
from a terminal shows the following when I attempt to send an email.
Receiving email works properly.
2~QWidget::setMaximumSize: (unnamed/RecipientComboBox) The largest allowed
size is (32767,32767)
sending an email typically ends with the error message:

Sending failed:
Could not connect to host mail.ntplx.net.
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the
problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox'
folder. The following transport protocol was used:
NETPLEX

About half the time, attempting to send mail crashes kmail. The backtrace
ends like so:

I've remerged postfix, kdelibs, kdepim pam and anything else remotely related to
errors I have found. I've done revdep-rebuild. I've tried emerge eD system and
I've removed kdepim and merged kmail by itself. I'm lost Logs don't seem to
show anything useful and frankly I'm stumped. It seems to be a problem with
smtp I haven't changed any kmail settings and I merged thunderbird and it seems
to have the same problems.
What else can I try here? My frustration level is such that I'm about to start
throwing something. Using my ISP's webmail interface is a PITA.

This back trace should be having a approximately 10 lines more in the
beginning. It should be starting from probably the name of a library and then
the lines from #0 should follow and #7. Can you check the backtrace again?

Try deleting and setting up smtp server.

I've tried that in the past and tried again. No joy. I appreciate the suggestion
though.

Hi,
Not very much help, but it seems you're using a postfix server to process to mail.
The server rejects the connections so they time-out.
Do you have some filtering/SPAM/AVIR rules in KMail? Is postfix a local server-seems so.
Check your postfix etc. config. Running 'qmail' here no postfix experience.

Only out of desperation

The server rejects the connections so they time-out.

Why would the server reject connections? What does the authentication? This
seems to be the big question. For some reason, I can't get kmail or thunderbird
to "shake hands" with my ISP's SMTP server. The user name and password are
valid. I can access the webmail interface just fine.

Other than filters to send mail to appropriate folders, no

Is postfix a local

I've got no idea how to set up postfix. If I'm going to use it, I'll need a
howto or some pointers. I only installed postfix to try to get kmail working.
In order to run kmail or thunderbird, what MTA should I be using? I obviously
blew off something when I did a depclean and I'm lost at this point as to what
I need to get email sending working again.I have a mepis CD here. I'm thinking
I should boot to that and see what I can figure out. does anyone have
suggestions as to what I should be looking for?

I've looked at qmail, it seems postfix blocks it. I suppose I won't be any worse
off without postfix. I'll read up on qmail and see if it will serve my purpose
for the short term, but I REALLY want to get kmail working. I'm becomming
obsessed, perturbed and frustrated.

The fact that sasl wasn't on your system would dictate that kdepim was built
without it's support.
Try re-emerging kdepim and say yes to sasl/saslauth, or whatever it's called.

Hi,
You don't need 'postfix' (nor 'qmail') to send mail using your ISP's mail-servers.
So check (and change if need be) the settings in Kmail&TB to use your ISP mail-server.
Currenly you must be using the local postfix server to process the mail and as it's not
configured it breaks. Usually it's something like: mail.ISP-name-here.com
Check again username & password for the server. Unmerge 'postfix' - not needed.

I'm not trying to do anything special... just get kmail to send mail. I have a
bellsouth account as well as a Netplex account. Both were set up for pop server
and worked fine until I deleted old KDE versions and did some house cleaning. It
would seem that I removed what ever is supposed to handle authentication to my
ISP's SMTP server, or possibly I borked some config file somewhere. IIRC, when
I installed Gentoo 3 years ago, I set it up to use the reccomended MTA, and
everything just worked. I can't tell what, if anything I may have done to blow
the mail sending, but, in all honesty, I've tried a lot of ways to fix this and
am unsure of all the changes I've made. What MTA are you using? I've seen in my
searches something written about MDA's but can't find out what, if any MDA I
should be running or what an MDA does.

user name and password are correct, or I wouldn't be able to access the webmail
interface. I'm thinking that I am lacking a service or that my MTA is not being
seen. IMHP, I am missing something very basic in my mail setup, but I'm
thouroughly lost. (postfix unmerged)

For what you're doing you don't need the MTA or MDAs. I just installed KDE
3.4 on one of my Gentoo systems and all I did was goto the accounts setup and
point it at bellsouth mailserver, enter the username, etc. and it worked. KDE
allows you to set up several accounts as you know and handles them very well.

Maybe to got Settings->configure kmail and set up a new test account that only
goes to Bellsouth.

Hi,

Have you tried to re-emerge kmail or kdepim if needed? Maybe if you
deleted something it needed, that would put it back. It is strange that
this thing is giving you fits.

. . . and run devdep-rebuild to hopefully pick up any broken

kmail->Configure KMail->Accounts->Sending->Select your bellsouth
smtp address->Modify->Check 'Server requires authentication then
enter login and password and check 'Store SMTP password'.

This is just too wierd! I've done all the maintainance steps everyone
has suggested, probably several times by now, but kmail still refuses to
send email. The good news is Thunderbird is working.
Being a creature of habit, I want to get kmail working.
Last night I did:

# emerge -eD kdepim

thinking that this would bring all dependancies in the correct order and
I would wake up able to use kmail. No such luck. The only change I've
seen so far is kmail has gone back to crashing when deleting failed
emails from the outbox. Below is the backtrace from the KDE crash
handeler, followed by the Konsole output.
Note that the Konsole output complains (when I deleted the failed mail)
kio (KDirWatch): WARNING: KDirWatch::removeDir can't handle
'/etc/samba/smb.conf'
kio (KDirWatch): WARNING: KDirWatch::removeDir can't handle
'/etc/security/fileshare.conf'
Wy would kmail want to remove smb.conf and fileshare.conf?

My thanks to all who have offered suggestions, I really appreciate the
effort.

I take it you mean kmail? Yes, I've unmerged kdepim and merged kmail and

What's in your .kde/share/config/kmailrc under the [Transport x]
headers?

Does "etc/s*" occur somewhere in your kmailrc or some other config
file?

Did you during your cleaning also clean out old kde files
from /etc/env.d/ ?
