[gentoo-user] KDE without aRts?

Hi,

I am currently running a "KDE 3.5" system with "arts" in /etc/make.conf but 
now experiencing serious problems with it. In my quest to remove arts I tried 
to do a "USE=-arts emerge -upDNv world" and found that emerge wants to 
recompile 134 packages!!! I am a bit sceptical in letting emerge take such a 
big step so I wanted to take advice from people with first hand experiences 
on running KDE without arts (if any). What all problems should I expect by 
putting a -arts in /etc/make.conf? I tried searching on Google and Gentoo 
Forums but could not find anything conclusive.

Also, I like to use JuK as my audio player and use Skype extensively. Will 
disabling arts trouble me? Is it a must to run a sound server? Here I would 
like to mention that I am using an on-board sound card (Intel HDA) which does 
not have hardware mixing but iirc ALSA's dmix has taken over the software 
mixing stuff now. So do I need a sound server AT ALL? If yes then will 
running JACK suffice? I have been reading a lot about JACK lately but don't 
know how it is faring on single user desktop systems.

I will be highly thankful for any insights.

Skype requires artsd in order to work properly. I think I read it 
somewhere in the installation requirements of Skype. Prior to Skype 
I didn't have artsd enabled in KDE and there were no troubles.

Skype does not require artsd, it uses OSS. This unfortunately means that you 
have to stop all software, that is currently accessing the audio device in 
order to use it (ALSA cannot do sw mixing, because it is done in userspace 
and the drivers, including the oss emulation layer, run in kernel space).

This is why gentoo's ebuild for skype includes a wrapper script that checks 
for the presence of artsd or esd and uses artsdsp or esddsp to start skype, 
so that software mixing is not lost (if neither is present skype is started 
normally). I tried using alsa's wrapper (aoss), but I did not have any 
success. So if you dislike artsd, you can use esd, but I could not get skype 
to work with it, meaning that it started normally, but after calling 
somebody, I could not hear them and they could not hear me.

Yes, you are right. Now I can remember where I read about artsd (or 
other wrapper) for skype - it was the text after emerging skype and 
not on the skype website. Thanks for the background info!

Thanks for that info. I have stopped aRts from running by disabling the sound 
system from control center since last night. The strange part is that Skype 
is working better without aRts. The only thing I have to make sure is that I 
don't have any sound playing in background. Now, I'll see whether I face any 
problems with aRts disabled. If it works for 2-3 days without hitch then I am 
dumping aRts for good.

btw my other question is still unanswered. Why do we need a sound server at 
all and if we need one then how does JACK fair compared to aRts?

I don't run arts and things seem to work but as someone else pointed out skype 
needs artsd.  I have -arts in my make.conf.  

As for all those packages the -D makes it also do dependencies.

AFAIK there is a problem. kde compiled without arts does not have sound
events. You may search bugs.kde.org for related bugs. This was tested by
me on kde-3.4.2 and was broken. Bug is still opened...

But seems that in next version of kde arts will be deprecated. So my
suggestion is to leave arts in USE flags for kde only and disable it for
other applications. Then in kcontrol you may wish to disable arts too,
and use external player option. Thus artsd remains in your system but
it'll be never used.

That is exactly what I am doing :)
I have disabled aRts and using alsaplayer to play the sounds. If everything 
goes fine for sometime then I will try to put a -arts in make.conf and see 
how it goes.
