Hi,
Did this yesterday, this is from memory only.
There was a new dependency: in place of "xpdf" came "poppler" (from Xorg).
So i had to first unmerge "xpdf" as it was blocking "poppler", then emerge 
poppler + some app - all done (at least for me).
Now if i want "xpdf" i can emerge it separatedly  (together with 'motif').
Check the Changelogs, maybe some words about that change.
