Hi,
I just got a shiny new ASUS A8V Delux MB. This MB has two SATA-Raid
controllers - one Promise PDC20378 and a VIA VT8237. I want to setup two
SATA-Disks in a RAID-1 configuration (both controllers support this) and i am
wondering if someone has experience with this MB (and Gentoo of course) and
can tell me which RAID-controller works best with Linux.
Regards,

I'm using both of them: 4 discs are attached to this box, 1 to IDE0
channel, 1 to Via and 2 to Promise.
No problem insofar but the fact that disc names are given at boot
depending on drives attached.
For example if you have sda, sdb and sdc, if you remove sda, then sdb
and sdc will be renamed and sdc will be missing.
A part this windows-like behaviour both controllers work very well.
AFAIK Knoppix livecd can't see hard drives attached to Promise, but grml
is very handy, as it comes with LVM tools too: http://www.grml.org/.
Side note: don't trust RAID setting of the motherboard and use Linux
software RAID. Just google a bit, and you will see a lot of advices of
this kind.
Ciao
Francesco
