Hi,
I've installed the nvidia drivers by the walkthrough of "Gentoo Linux nVidia
Guide". Emerge installed "nvidia-glx v1.0.6629-r6" and "nvidia-kernel
v1.0.6629-r4" with no problems and i did the necessary changes in the "
xorg.conf" file. Then i tested my card with "glxinfo | grep direct" and
"glxgears" and i got errors:
glxinfo | grep direct
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.
Also after a restart gdm couln't start with a X server error:
Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that
it is not set up correctly...
I searched the net but couldn't find a solution yet. Please help me to solve
this problem, thanks.

you should also load 'ddc'
Option "dpms" in your monitor section would be usefull, too.
It would not harm you to remove the 'generic' and unneeded stuff. Makes the
conf more readable.
Beside of that, your conf is looking good.
Did you did 'opengl-update nvidia' or 'eselect opengl set nvidia'?

I am by no means an expert on this subject, but any time you have an X
server problem, you run "startx -- :1" from a shell. This starts the X
server up on virtual terminal 8. The X server starts dumping out
information, which might be helpful for diagnostics.

Well, your /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks fine, but the log shows that the glx module
was not loaded. Did you reboot after the emerge?
I suggest trying the following logged in as root -
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.2D
cd $home
/etc/init.d/xdm stop
From the console -
X -confgure
vi/nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
- Change - /dev/mouse to /dev/misc/psaux (or whatever your favorite is)
- Comment out "load dri"
Then do (X will tell you what the proper command line is at the end of configure) -
X -file /root/xorg.conf.new
If X comes up, exit out,
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg/conf
/etc/init.d/xdm start
You may need to change or add a mode line to get the resolution you want
and add a - "DefaultDepth 24" to - "Section "Screen""
But it should load glx with no problem.

Which xorg configuration is this? Whichever it is, it is not the one
used by Xorg given the error logs.
The above states that it is loading module "nv", which is the xorg
driver for nvidia chipsets. If you are using the nvidia driver, it
should say:
(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
(II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.7676
Module class: XFree86 Video Driver
(II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 1.0-7676 Fri Jul 29 13:00:04 PDT 2005
(II) NVIDIA Unified Driver for all NVIDIA GPUs
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device
(--) Chipset NVIDIA GPU found
......
check to make sure the xorg configuration you posted below is the same
one at /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and that the error log above is from the
failed attempt at starting X.

AFAIK these sections should be uncommented i relevant sections to load dri
module and set required permissions. Also put the user in "video" group.

you are so totally wrong...
no.
dri has to be removed and the stuff at the end to be removed or commented out.
So he got that correct.
DRI is for Ati users and other poor sods.

sorry for the delay guys, i worked hard for solution. now i have a different
problem. First, i want to tell you what i did;
- I've checked my xorg.conf file with "X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and got
this error: "NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!".
- Then read the nvidia document and see that i have missing nvidia* device
files at /dev/
- Searched for that on google and found
this<http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-375466-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-25.html>,
and this <http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104369#c8> page. Then, for
missing nodes i've run "/sbin/NVmakedevices.sh"
- After that nvidia device files appeared at /dev:
ls -la /dev/nvidia*
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 0 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 1 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidia1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 2 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidia2
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 3 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidia3
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 4 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidia4
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 5 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidia5
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 6 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidia6
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 7 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidia7
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 255 Nov 13 17:38 /dev/nvidiactl
- And also i've made this script autoload by adding it to "
/etc/conf.d/local.start"
- After all when i restarted my computer i got only a black screen with no
errors or something. Other terminals weren't reachable too.
I didn't understand anything and any hope?

Here is the log file for X for that black screen session

Hi,
hmm, your config&log don't look bad - maybe you should go to the official
nvidia forum and explain your problem there. The chance, that someone might
solve is, is much higher.
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14
oh, and don't forget to run nvidia-bug-report.sh, it collects all info they
want.

Hi, at last i got it work but i'm not pleased because i couldn't see any
performance increment. To solve the problem i simple added this line in
device section:
Option "NvAGP" "1"
which tells X to use NVIDIA internal AGP. (Note that i tried all values for
NvAGP. 2 and 3 didn't function, black screen again, 0 and 1 functioned).
With that i could see the Nvidia splash image at gdm startup. Also i tested
my card again with "glxinfo | grep direct" and "glxgears", worked with no
errors:
glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
As i told i'm not pleased, here is my glxgears outputs:
1- Just after a gnome session, no additional program is running:
860 frames in 5.0 seconds = 172.000 FPS
973 frames in 5.0 seconds = 194.600 FPS
1003 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.600 FPS
1004 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.800 FPS
1004 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.800 FPS
1003 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.600 FPS
1004 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.800 FPS
1004 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.800 FPS
1004 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.800 FPS
1004 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.800 FPS
1003 frames in 5.0 seconds = 200.600 FPS
2- When i only move the terminal window continously (drawing circles) :(
83 frames in 5.0 seconds = 16.600 FPS
35 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7.000 FPS
43 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8.600 FPS
40 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8.000 FPS
41 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8.200 FPS
34 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6.800 FPS
43 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8.600 FPS
36 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7.200 FPS
28 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5.600 FPS
38 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7.600 FPS
37 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7.400 FPS
I've searched for performance tricks and found options like RenderAccel,
also tried it with "true" value but it only decreased performance. Can this
be a kernel issue?. Or maybe NvAGP wansn't the real solution..

you are using a tnt2 vanta, right?
a low end tnt2 - so your glxgears output is not surprisingly low...

Ok but i don't think that it could be so low, there must be a point that i'm
missing because i tested with some live distros. You can understand it from
movement behaviour of window for such low values and when i compare it there
is realy a differance. I'll keep on searching the nvidia forum and google
for any hope. If i could make it i'll post my solution here. Thank you all
for your help.
