90% of the time I've broken a Gentoo install has involved etc-update and
admittedly myself doing something stupid.
I've since developed the habit of tarring the /etc directory before running
update.
So I was thinking it would be nice to have a -B option for etc-update which
creates /somewhere/logical/etc.tar.gz before running etc-update.
Of course this wouldn't be complete without a --restore option which
overwrites the existing /etc with the last created etc.tar.gz thus giving us
goofs a unlimited amount of chances to get it right.
Any thoughts?

Why not use dispatch-conf instead?

Try dispatch-conf instead of etc-update. When use_rcs ist set to yes
in /etc/dispatch-conf.conf, and rcs is emerged, you get a backup of
each file.

dispatch-conf is not in gentoolkit, it is part or portage.
# qpkg -f `which dispatch-conf `
sys-apps/portage

Absolutely, I wouldn't be without eix.

The trouble with life is that you are halfway through it before you
realize it's a "do it yourself" thing.

Because it has some annoying quirks of its own that made me go back to
etc-update. Etc-update would be perfect if it had the archiving features
added to it. That said, I would rather use it (and be very very careful)
rather than put up with dispatch-conf.

I use cfg-update and have been happy with it for a while.

Or he can set a subversion repository i he, like Khattri, doesn't like
dispatch-conf.

Perhaps. But, I hope you don't find out the unpleasant way what it
is not to backup your file systems.
