I've since developed the habit of tarring the /etc directory before running update. So I was thinking it would be nice to have a -B option for etc-update which creates /somewhere/logical/etc.tar.gz before running etc-update. Of course this wouldn't be complete without a --restore option which overwrites the existing /etc with the last created etc.tar.gz thus giving us goofs a unlimited amount of chances to get it right.
