Just install say kde or gnome or whatever (see the docs) and X will be installed and configured automagically. for instance, I installed this dell laptop, then emerged kde-meta (be patient if you try that...my poor celeron took 16 hours to do that) and followed the documentation for kde on the gentoo site and it's all happy...except sound works in xmms, but not kde sytem notifications....not sure why, but it's at the BOTTOM of my list.
