Hello everybody,
At the end of a successful emerge --sync I was advised
to "update portage". It didn't say but I assumed it
meant "emerge update portage", which is what I did --
so far so good. But the manual only gives update
system or world, no portage.
Is emerge update portage the same thing as emerge
update system? The stuff it's updating seem like
"system" stuff: gcc, binutils, glib etc.

An "emerge portage" should be fine.

If you have run "emerge world", portage would be automatically updated
together with other packages.

you can emerge update anything, eg
emerge update kde-multimedia
emerge update portage is just an example of updating a particular
package instead of your whole world.
