So, the entry: lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 13 Jun 17 06:55 cdrom -> cdroms/cdrom0 would point to: brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 22, 0 Jul 18 19:27 hdc Notice the permission is root:cdrom and not root:root.
