I have a cable with serial on one end and parallel on the end and I
was wonder if I can use it to share my Internet connection with my
FreeBSD laptop (I would put Gentoo on it if I had an Internet
connection).?

hmmm I have never heard of a network connection from serial-parallel

you might like to look at slip and/or plip

slip is ip over serial, plip is ip over parallel.

or invest in a pmcia netowrk card?

This is probably a serial or paralel extend cable.

You can use a serial cable wth ppp. but a network card would be easier.

Serial ports come in 15 pin and 25 pin varieties. If the 25 pin connector on
the cable is female, it's serial, if it's male, it's parallel. But to answer
your question, you can set up a slip connection. Check tldp.org for a howto.
HTH.
