True enough for now, but eventually the kernel developers will force
you to udev, so my very humble opinion is, get used to udev. I did
that a year ago, solved a few wrinkles, and now the system just hums.
udev also has some nice features for assigning fixed /dev/names for
devices regardless of the order of discovery.

I have the belief and hopes that when the kernel forced udev upon me, it'll be
fully operational, no bugs. Until that time, I refuse to do anymore debug
testing for the kernel developers... :')

Hmmm! A bug-free kernel! Now that would be a wonder to see. Sometime
around the time that hell freezes over.

I had better report back on how it worked out now that this thread is in
GWN LOL.
Before I posted I had already compiled the kernel with no devfs support
at all. I also emerged udev.
When I booted after setting everything up it "just went", with no devfs
in the kernel. I assume I would have received the same result if I had
compiled in devfs and either NOT compiled in the option to start devfs
on boot OR booted with the kernel parameter gentoo=nodevfs

That should be AND, not OR. If the kernel is compiled to automatically
start devfs, it is started before gentoo=nodevfs is acted upon. You
should not use the auto option in the kernel if you want to run udev
at any time. Control is by kernel parameters only.
