On our LAN we have our printer hooked up to catherine.espersunited.com
at 192.168.1.3. I set this up about a month ago, following the Gentoo
Printing Guide. For awhile it worked, but now it doesn't. When I try
to print something remotely from one of the other computers on the
network, everything seems to go smoothly, but nothing actually prints.
When I try to print something locally in seamonkey or firefox, the
browser freezes up when I ask for the print dialog. konquerer gave me a
hint that the CUPS server wasn't responding, but it does seem to be
running and there doesn't seem to be anything conspicuous
in /var/log/cups/error_log. In fact, what is there doesn't seem to
belong there. Here's some information:

There don't seem to be any actual errors in the error_log. Strange. Is
there anything here that can hint as to why nothing is happening?

I changed LogLevel to debug, erased /var/log/error_log (just to make
sure the information I was looking at was current), and restarted cupsd.
I sent a job from 192.168.1.3 (I was wrong - catherine is 192.168.1.4)
and checked /var/log/cups/error_log:

Can you print from the console on catherine using lp? If so, can you
print from the console on another machine?

Have you recently upgraded the server? In some cases, documents sent as
type application/octet-stream silently fail to print (I had this trouble
a while ago) if the mime-type isn't enabled in /etc/cups/mime.types and
mime.convs. Those files get replaced with some cups builds, and by
default octet-stream isn't enabled in the packaged files. Do a

# grep 'application/octet-stream' /etc/cups/mime.*

to check that any line containing that phrase isn't commented.

OK. I can print echoing to /dev/lp0 on catherine. I haven't tried
printing from other boxes because I'm not quite sure how to echo
something to catherine's /dev/lp0 remotely. I still can't print from
seamonkey on catherine and konquerer still reports that something is
wrong with the CUPS server. I did grep those files:

catherine ~ # grep 'application/octet-stream' /etc/cups/mime.*
/etc/cups/mime.convs:application/octet-stream	application/vnd.cups-raw
0	-
/etc/cups/mime.types:application/octet-stream

Still nothing useful in the error log. When I tried to step through the
printer config in the CUPS web interface and selected my printer model,
it said that it couldn't copy the PPD file. Our printer is an Epson
Stylus C88. I ordered a test page printed about half an hour ago, and
when I stepped through the printer config it suddenly printed it. The
test page looked good, but seamonkey still crashes if I try to access
the Print dialogue (including Print Preview). What else can I do?
