[gentoo-user] Intel High Definition Audio and its problems

Hi,

I have a Fujitsu Amilo laptop, which has a "nice" audio subsystem,
called 
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High
Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

I have some problems with it:
no master volume, skype cannot use its microphone, even I can adjust the
volume of the mic and I can hear my voice when I speak with echo123, but
skype records no sound.

I would like to know, does anybody have this kind of audio system and
how to solve this kind of issue?

I googled for a day, but there is no solution to my problem.

fwiw, my laptop has an 82801(FB (ICH6) chipset, and I suffer the same 
problem with 2.6.20 - no mic despite using every trick I know of.

However, it all works just fine with a lower kernel version. I might be 
wrong but I think 2.6.19 worked fine, either that or 2.6.18.

What results do you get by using a lower kernel version, or by using out 
of tree alsa modules?

I have an HP/Compaq nx9420 with an Intel HDA Chipset and Skype/Mic. is working 
fine here.
I remember some troubles concerning KMix switching the capture LED of the 
Capture-Channel to off after 1-5 seconds, but IIRC it was working finally 
without any problems.

Will take a look at my configuration in ~4-5hours, when I'm at home.

Yes, I will. I found lot of problems with this kind of sound card, even
with windows xp.

An other interesting thing: how to use the modem :)
I installed slmodem, seems working, but not tested yet.

Hi,

I used your configuration and now I got a lot of new options than
before.
I attached my gnome-mixer screenshots.

Hmmm, maybe it is a PEBCAK, but I still cannot record my voice via
microphone :)

It is funny, but I only have 2 pieces jacks, one for audio out and one
for microphone in.
This laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 1505
I cannot see any built-in microphone.
And I cannot imagine, how can I get 6 channel via 4 channel (2 jacks).

So, my experiences:
In the oss settings, I cannot decrease the 'Volume'. It is always 100%,
I cannot move the slider.
PCM-2 is the same. Cannot decrease its value.
In-gain reflects to my actions, but I do not hear any changes.

In oss record settings, Microphone settings effects to the loudness of
my microphone. I can hear my voice, I can change its volume, mute/unmute
etc. Via alsa's microphone settings too.
Line-in (oss): if I move the slider to higher value, I can hear some
crackling while I move the slider. If I turn on the record on this
line-in, it screws the playback (audaciaous), but turning off stops this
strange thing.


Alsa volume control, playback:
PCM controls the volume of audacious :)
'Vonalbemenet' is line-in, the same as in oss, except, this does not
screw the playback.
Microphon controls, mute/unmute the volume of mic.
On the record tab, the Capture: nothing important.

Switches: boys, this is mysterious for me. I can recognise letters,
words, but the meanings......... :)
There are some Mic switches, surround, front, caller-id,
off-hook.............
'Dunno.

Channel mode: 2ch/6ch
If I switch to 6ch, microphone turns to silent. I think it is normal. I
never use more than two speakers :)

One thing, vumeter does not show anything now, but before it shows me
the mic level, I saw my voice loudness in it.

About audiacous:
When I use esound as output, everything working well: I can control the
volume.
If I change to alsa output, I cannot control the volume via
gnome-volume-control or via audiacous (what a silly name :) volume
control: the volume is 100%.

So, my opinion, this sound card is a shEEt (I mean, this one in my
laptop :)
The other possibility is that, I am really stupid, but I beleive the
previous theory.

So, I must learn a lot, if I would like to use this "thing".

Maybe somebody can use the following information.

Hi!

I have a similar card in my lenovo laptop. At first my mic did not work 
either, but then I found something:

My resolution was:
Try alsamixer -V all you will then be provided with more channels and 
hopefully a capture device. There you have to push space so "CAPTURE" appears 
in red. The same for the mic. Then unmute and turn up the capture and the mic 
device.

Hopefully this works for you too.

First, thank you all for your help!

Now, I am able to use microphone with skype and arecord also recorded my
beautiful voice :)

The question is, how, right? :)

I modified my /etc/modules.d/alsa based on Elias Probst's and Mauro
Faccenda's settings. Thank you guys!

This settings seems separate modem and the sound card and the last
option determine the correct type and fixes something :)

I found that, my laptop has two jacks:
one is line-in/microphone, the other one is headphone/spdif output.
My laptop manual says, it has a spdif output: 7.1.
(Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 1505)

Now I have only Front, IEC958 (???), Caller ID, Off-hook switches in the
Alsa device. Only Front turned on.
Input source is Mic, Capture enabled and setup around 20%, on playback
the Microphone muted.


I did not use the modem itself, but I plan to try it out in the future.
I think, I will start a new thread about Si3054 kind of modem and how to
use it :)
I installed slmodem package, seems working (I mean, slamr module loaded
without problem) :

In order to get my intel-hda modem working I had to buy the drivers from 
linuxant. If slmodem doesn't work  for you emerge hsfmodem. If that one works 
then you have to shell out US$20 for the full version. Kind of grates, but 
worth it to be able to get email while on the road.

mine is a

i had to compile the snd-hda-intel as module and add the following line 
in /etc/modules.d/alsa:
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-digout position_fix=1 index=0

now it works pretty fine.

with skype, i configured it to use OSS. don't know exactly why, but it works 
fine.
