comma is the correct syntax, not semi-colon.

Once you've done that, log out and back in again.

if the logout-login doesn't work, then post the relevant part
of /var/log/messages when plugging in the usb device.

Also, post details of the usb thing that you're trying to use - what is
it? and the gnome, udev and kernel version.
