Are there any known glitches in using the nvidia drivers with an
athlon64?

I have a mythtv box that I have finally dumped the old hardware due to a
flakey cpu - new MB, RAM and CPU (3200+), but the original nvidia FX5200
which was working nicely.

Ive partially rebuilt all the packages using the athlon64 arch, but I am
finding that starting X does not work - end up with a shut down monitor
(overranged?) - if I exit back to a console (takes awhile) its pink! It
returns to normal after a reboot.

I have two AMD 64's one at work and one at home both run nvidia drivers and
while there werre times when I had problems initially - they were cured when
I went to the latest nvidia drivers (~amd64) and I have never had a problem
with either system in over 6 months. It could be a misconfigured
xorg.conffile so try re-doing that and recompiling nvidia-kernel and
nvidia-glx.

This was exactly it - though not strictly 'mis-configured. Its a mythtv
box setup to run on a TV, and I had plugged a monitor in to use it. A
bit red faced as I should have twigged much earlier than just an hour
ago!
