Look stop guessing and do some diagnosis.
firstly use ldd to make sure that there are no broken links to
libraries.
secondly run xine with strace, saving the results to a file. there will
usually be something revealing at the point of the crash, which may
reveal the problem.
also, does mplayer still play dvd's?
