To unsubscribe send a mail to:
gentoo-user+unsubscribe@gentoo.org
... you got this with the "Welcome" message during subscribing.

Not only that. In every mail you get from this list, there is a line in the header:
List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:gentoo-user+unsubscribe@gentoo.org>

Actually, as was posted before, the gentoo.org way is incorrect. It
specifies <list-name>-unsubscribe instead of <list-name>+unsubscribe
I am filing a bug now.

Why dont we just change it so that unsubscribe in the subject line
unsubscribes you (like every other mailing list on the internet)?

In fact, it is "-" not "+"...
And with all the sources around, they still can't find it.
I dont see a reason to change the way it works, what is left to change
is the mind of the "unsubscribers" that don't even read the welcome
message...

Interestingly enough, I just checked three of the several mailing lists
to which I am subscribed, and none of them take unsubscription by
sending a mail *to the list* with the subject "unsubscribe".
So I was under the impression that "every other mailing list on the
Internet" was unsubscribed by sending such a mail to the *list
controller* (whatever mailman or its alternatives are called as a
class), not the list itself, and that was thus 'normal' behaviour.
You learn something new every day.

The mail doesn't have "unsubscribe" in the subject line.

Are you sure about that? The List-info in the headers clearly indicate
a "+", and AFAIK, those items are generated from the mailer, which
should show what they accept.
Also, if you read the docs to mlmmj (the mailinglist software for this
list), you'd see that "+" is the default...
Lastly, this is unnecessary quibble, because infra just informed me
that both should work, but ideally the webpage should agree with the
list-headers.
(At least we agree on Emacs)

Just a short note on that. Even though the instructions didn't mention
this, last I checked, you should put "unsubscribe" without the quotes
in the Subject line. I tried to subscribe with a blank subject and
body, and got nothing. I added "subscribe" to the subject line and
voila! It worked.
