Once you have the driver, you can search for compatible hardware. Usually, Atheros-chips should be a good way to go, although there are different versions of them (and some of them wont go to AP-mode). I tried to accomplish the same with several USB-devices and hostap. I managed getting up an Software-802.11n access-point, but the throughput = was kinda bad so I got back to the WLAN provided by the DSL-Router.
