Die Lösung halte ich für ziemlich unsauber.  IMHO solltest du
kde-base/kde aus /var/lib/portage/world entfernen und statt dessen aus
folgender Liste die Pakete eintragen, die du haben willst:

kde-base/kdebase
kde-base/kdeaddons
kde-base/kdeadmin
kde-base/kdeartwork
kde-base/kdeedu
kde-base/kdegames
kde-base/kdegraphics
kde-base/kdemultimedia
kde-base/kdenetwork
kde-base/kdepim
kde-base/kdetoys
kde-base/kdeutils
kde-base/kdewebdev
kde-base/kdeaccessibility

Danach dann updaten und auch mal mit "emerge -pv --depclean" nachschaun,
ob du vielleicht überflüssige Pakete installiert hast.

Aber wenn du eh schon dabei bist, kannst du auch gleich auf die
Split-Ebuilds [1] umstellen.
