Se você tem REDE sua melhor opção é SSH, console serial é um acesso físico,
geralmente para emergências (quando você perde todas as outras interfaces
pela rede).
Lembrando que uma porta serial é um dispositivo no Linux (um nó no /dev, uma
tty, se não me engano ttyS0), você coloca um login shell escutando nessa
porta e tá feito, mas você só tem acesso a ela diretamente de outro
computador pela serial (usando minicom para acessar a porta diretamente).
Faz séculos que não configuro um acesso dessa forma, mas já acessei
roteadores e aceleradores assim para manutenção tanto pelo Linux (minicom)
como pelo Windows (hyperterminal).
