Uma abordagem muito interessante nesse dilema 32 vs 64 bits é a do
Fedora: o kernel é 64 bits e o userland é 32 bits. Com isso, você tem
os benefícios do mapeamento de memória direto em 64 bits, mas os
programas para 32 bits não chiam.

No Gentoo, fazer isso exigiria uma série de gambiarras, pois a
compilação do kernel precisaria das bibliotecas em versão 64 bits,
enquanto que o restante do sistema usaria as mesmas bibliotecas (e
muitas outras) em 32 bits.

É, em alguns casos as distribuições binárias têm vantagem.
