Muito bom pessoal!
Finalmente consegui resolver esse problema.
Realmente o problema era o pbzip2. Tentei descompactar o pacote com o bzip2
e funcionou normalmente. Removi ele e o portage consegui compilar o bendito
do pacote... Pelo que li o pbzip2 traz um ganho de desempenho muito grande
para processadores multi-core. Somente esse pacote deu esse problema.
Voltarei a usar o pbzip2 para fazer mais alguns testes nele, agora que já
consegui entender como lidar com ele.
