Quem cria o xorg.conf
realmente são os comando xorgconfig ou xorgcfg.

Ei, gera sim.
Olha o man aí.
-configure
When this option is specified, the Xorg server loads all video driver
modules, probes for available hardware, and ***writes out an
initial xorg.conf(5)*** file based on what was detected. This option
currently has some problems on some platforms, but in most cases it
is a good way to bootstrap the configuration process. This
option is only available when the server is run as root (i.e, with
real-uid 0).

> Segue o meu make.conf:

X.
Aí depois tu tenta descobrir qual o driver correto pra tua placa.

Olá Pessoal,
Eu lembro de ter um problema semelhante.
uso

Olha a saída do próprio comando:
# Xorg -configure
X Window System Version 1.3.0
Release Date: 19 April 2007
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 1.3
...
(++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"
...
Your xorg.conf file is /root/xorg.conf.new
To test the server, run 'X -config /root/xorg.conf.new'

eu compilei o xorg denovo através do world e o ambiente gráfico

sim...

...eu mudei o make.conf colocando o driver correto e rodei um emerge

que recompilar o world.

:P
obrigado a todos pela ajuda!
