Eu lembro de ter um problema semelhante.
uso
VIDEO_CARDS="i915 intel trident fbdev vesa mga tdfx"
e lembro que para funcionar tive de fazer um link adicional
em /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/
ln -s intel_drv.so i810_drv.so
