Its becoming more evident that some of us are lacking on sufficient time
for this council. I'm curious what we should do to help that situation.
One of the major issues so far has the been the extremely slow responses
to funding requests (I admit, I'm slow too). And after they're approved,
we're still stuck waiting on someone to actually make the transaction.

There's just too many bottlenecks and its really starting to annoy some
of our developers. I understand that we're all volunteers and only have
so much time to deal with this stuff, but we really need to try and do
something to deal with that. We were elected in our position so that
means we should put more effect in what we do.

Do we need to make the process better, easier on us? I think we've
actually past the deadline on having another election for trustees
(which I'm surprised no one has complained about yet). Should we just
have another election for this year and get new people on board that
have the sufficient time, or do we need to look at another alternative
to that?

The main example I'd like to point out is the recent AMD64 request. Its
been sitting on our table for a *long time*. And once it got approved
the transaction of funds for it never happened (I'm not trying to attack
anyone that was in charge of that). Then osprey had issues, then
suddenly everyone was on board to fund that too (within 48 hours). And
since then, we're still waiting on funding to actually get moved.

Either we need to hand over duties to people who do have the time, or we
need to do something else about it. Its really becoming frustrating and
apparent to our developers that we don't move very fast at all.

I know from my side of things I've been busy with work related stuff and
 other real-life stuff. I've tried my best to keep up on things with the
foundation, but its hard to do sometimes with all the other noise I see
in email.

Although I am still a Gentoo Developer, I am only maintaining ebuilds now.  I 
would like to reaffirm with the Gentoo Council and the Board of Trustees that 
my retirement in January included my post on the Board of Trustees. Effective 
today (6/17/2006), I will not be participating in the upper-level management 
of Gentoo.  I only participated in the funding request for amd64 in order to 
help move it through.  When I returned as a dev in April, I found a nice 
comfy niche maintaining several ebuilds and I don't want to disturb that. :-)  
Please find someone new to fill my trustee spot.

Thanks for updating us on that. I went ahead and removed you from the
mailing list. Thanks for the contributions in the past!

Rest of us-

Looking through our current list of foundation members [1], it looks as
though we have at least 2 confirmed members that are no longer on the
board, and possibly one other that aren't very active much in Gentoo
anymore.

Confirmed no longer with us:

  * Corey Shields, cshields
  * Jason Huebel, jhuebel

Possibly inactive:

  * Deedra Waters, dmwaters

I don't recall if Deedra every actually retired or not. But I know she's
not doing much in Gentoo anymore (or at least I haven't seen it).

To me its probably a good idea to start up the election process for new
foundation members, or at least tie up loose ends before we do that. I
know we had a few things we wanted to try and get done before the
election. It would be nice to finally get a real bank account open so we
don't have all our money tied in paypal. I think Donnie was looking into
that, how is that coming along? I'm getting rather nervous with our
money there :-(.

Hi Lance,

Thanks for looking into all of that.  I can confirm that Deedra is, in
fact, no longer on the board at all. She resigned very early this year.

As for elections, we're over due.

Some of the pending items: do we want to include in the general voting:
the actual *size* of the board.  I remember Grant had mentioned onlist
that the board could do with downsizing anyway to 5 or 7 members.  I
personally agree with that assessment.

Anyone else have anything to say about it?

Plus it would mean less people needed for a majority vote. For me 7
makes sense. I'd be worried about 5 with too many duties that are needed
(or may be needed).

Question is, wherefore we actually need trustees and where
they should hail from?  See, I'm from Germany and I can't do
stuff like opening a bank account in the USA.  Also I have
some difficulties with US tax stuff, but that's something I
can learn.

My aim for being in this board was to have somebody present
from an area with a lot of Gentoo users.  Being present at
the fairs and conferences over here in Old Europe.  And I
wanted to improve the connections between the local
organisations in Europe and the Foundation.

I still think that we should have such a person in the board
of trustees.  Beside that we need some trustees who can
really manage this Foundation and finish all the
paper-stuff.

Once we get a decent account (yes this is my problem and I am working on
it), international trustees will have access to it. Bank of America
allows for this, although there will be some strange details needed like
mailing a signature card all over the world to any trustee who needs
access to the account.

Yes, I agree. Not everyone on the board should be an "expert" in the
same area. A diverse board helps Gentoo.

I don't think that anything else but what we have already in place (wrt
organisation) would be better. After all, an organisation such as ours has
to be ran by a group of volunteers. What else are the options?

That said, I also think that the election process is bound to be started.
