I am in the second year of my Ph.D study in the school of software and microelectronics, Peking University. I have 2 years' experience of using Linux distros and Xen/KVM virtual machine. A few months ago, I have changed my daily desktop to Gentoo and enjoy it very much. I am interested in the project Micro Gentoo[1]. And I have submitted my proposal on the google-melange[2]. The Micro Gentoo project goal is to create an extremely minimal Gentoo VM consisting of not much more than a kernel and would fetch compiled files on-demand. These files are initially on a remote server. Meanwhile, the project also considers the smooth-secure OS updates and remote repositories selection. I would comprehensively base my work on the technologies of uCernVM, Chromeos and CoreOS, and then adapt them to Gentoo. The deliverables include Micro-Gentoo building scripts, updaters, eselect module and patches to genkernel, etc. The Gentoo users will benefit a lot from this project. They can deploy Micro Gentoo with very little initial network latency and fetch files on-demand. It also avoids updating package by package which is time consuming and has risks. With Micro Gentoo, the users just select a new version of Gentoo repo and smoothly switch to it. Micro Gentoo also provides roll back mechanism. Therefore, the project is a great application for cloud computing of Gentoo. I am looking forward to your feedback.
