Subject: [gentoo-soc] [GSoC] Gentoo/OpenBSD port proposal
Date: Sun, 17 Apr 2011 22:14:48 +0200 [thread overview]
Message-ID: <BANLkTinKnVwAqbR7J2LSYNJhB7rkgPtmDQ@mail.gmail.com> (raw)
Hello,
As a GSoC project I want to make the Gentoo/OpenBSD port, below is
more information on my proposal and motivation behind this project:
OpenBSD is a free, modern, well designed, good maintained and well
documented operating system focused on stability, portability and
security. The project motto is "security by default", its goal is to
provide secure system for everyone. Unfortunately, Gentoo/OpenBSD
port is dead. In addition, previous work hasn't reach satisfactory
level. My proposal is to bring Gentoo/OpenBSD back alive and make
the system useful, Gentoo flavored, secure and robust, as a personal
server platform. This project is targeted on people who:
* use both Gentoo and OpenBSD systems and miss Gentoo flavor on
OpenBSD (and vice versa).
* use OpenBSD and want to manage their system in Gentoo way.
* want to use OpenBSD benefits (eg. Packet Filter) on Gentoo.
* are looking for secure, stable system and want to try something new.
* want to mix OpenBSD security features with Gentoo portage and
customization.
* know OpenBSD already and want to learn Gentoo.
* are just curious. :)
Gentoo/OpenBSD will provide most security features from OpenBSD,
including i.a. systrace, W^X, Packet Filter. Opposite to
Gentoo-Hardened, all features in Gentoo/OpenBSD will be targeted for
the BSD systems.
Kind regards,
Mateusz Kocielski
