The first link on the search results has plenty of useful information.

Hi all!

I've recently updated portage to 2.1.1, after that, when I type emerge -puDvN
world I got:

[ebuild R ] sys-devel/gcc-4.1.1 USE="fortran nls (-altivec) -
bootstrap -build -doc -gcj -gtk (-hardened*) -ip28 -ip32r10k -mudflap (-
multilib) -multislot (-n32) (-n64) -nocxx -objc -objc++ -objc-gc -test -
vanilla" 38,302 kB

I have USE="hardened" in /etc/make.conf set, however since portage upgrade
this seems to be ignored. Even when I do

USE="hardened" emerge -pv gcc

Portage still unsets hardened flag. Im using amd64/2006.1/no-multilib
profile. Do you have any ideas?

Regards,
Tomek

In order to USE hardened, you must use a hardened profile. On other
profiles, the use flag is masked, which means no amount of coaxing on
your part will cause portage to set it. You may want to look at the
Hardened FAQ[1] for more information.

Thanks, is there a way to stay with current profile and hardmask "hardened"
flag? I dont want to switch to hardened profile because I would like to
maintain "nomultilib", pure 64-bit system.

The standard amd64 hardened profile isn't multilib enabled anyway
(whereas hardened/amd64/multilib is). I agree with Mike, you'd be
better of doing it the "right way" and using the correct profile.
That's what they're there for :)

I see, unfortunately this "hardened" profile has old glibc and gcc packages.
Of course I cant revert to old version of glibc in my system :-(

Ah, that's true - glibc-2.4 (and gcc-4 for that matter) is vetoed in
the hardened profile (see
/usr/portage/profiles/hardened/package.mask). Given that you're
already using the newer version of glibc, you could simply try
overriding this policy and unmasking it:

echo "=sys-libs/glibc-2.4*" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask

The alternative approach would be to prevent the profile you are using
now from masking the hardened USE flag which, if memory serves
correctly would be accomplished as follows:

echo "-hardened" >> /etc/portage/profile/use.mask

I would still recommend adapting the hardened profile to your needs
rather than vice versa.

Cheers,
