Hello!
I've been having problems with my Squid-equipped Gentoo box: For some
sites, Squid just times out. But if I access the sites directly, they
appear in my browser. And doing a direct wget from the Squidbox also
works.
Now I'm not sure whose 'fault' it is, but just in case it's Squid's,
I'll experiment with other web proxies.
Unfortunately, the selection in portage seems very limited. Oops,
Polipo, and 3proxy seem to have gone dormant, and Apache Traffic
Server is still Bug#335637 ( http://bugs.gentoo.org/335637 )
So, what can I do?

Varnish has been my proxy of choice lately and we're using it heavily
at my latest startup. They also publish their own debs and rpms via
their repo which is quite nice if you're not using Gentoo in production.
I've never had any problems with Squid, but I've only run 2.6/2.7 in prod.

I would have a closer look at varnish. We use it in production on some
heavy-traffic websites for years and it is fast and really dependable.

varnish is a reverse proxy only - it looks like Pandu Poluan is looking for a
forward proxy...

I have bump TS to v2.1.9 in the bug, version 2.1.9 is the last pre v3.0
stable release, although named as unstable, TS is very stable for most
production usage, give it a try.
v3.0 stable will be released in 2 weeks.
