Hi,

I was recently asked whether I could recommend a domain registrar
(preferably based in the UK). In the case of the company I'm working
for right now, many domains are managed through 123-reg.co.uk which
does not have a particularly good track record [1] in terms of the
reliability of their infrastructure, not to mention awkward management
tools. Nonetheless, I'm sticking to the status quo because going
through the bureaucratic process of transferring authority would be
more trouble than it's worth. Other than that, I would normally
procure domains as part of a hosting package with an ISP that I deem
reputable.

In this case, it's a personal request and the domains will be
independently registered (with hosting to be considered further on
down the road). So it occurred to me that I wasn't really in a
postition to actually recommend any particular registrar for an
independent registration of a .com/.co.uk.

I was wondering if anyone on the list might have any thoughts on the
matter. I'm aware that most registrars are much of a muchness,
especially as it does not tend to be a profit-making service.
Nonetheless, if there is a registrar based in the UK that is known to
have a solid infrastructure and that provides reasonable support, I'd
be happy to hear about it.

Regards,

--Kerin

I recommend godaddy. They are cheep and efficient, I have never had any
problems with them and have used them both as my primary DNS server as
well as just a registrar for my domains. I have been very happy with
them for almost 8 years now.

One, thing though... not really impressed by their webmail but it is
good if you have nothing else in your own infrastructure.

I would NOT recommend godaddy! See, for a number of explicit reasons
why I say this ....

http://nodaddy.com

GoDaddy has a serious Big Brother complex.

I use a small registrar out of St. Louis, MO, bestregistrar.com.
They've been in the DN registration business since NSI lost its
registration monopoly. But they're not in the UK ....

Thank you both for your input. I'm aware that Godaddy is the 800 pound
gorilla of the market and was particularly interested in what the
alternatives are. As such, I stumbled across this thread at Slashdot:

http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/02/03/0353231

This led me to gandi.net, which is based in France. I liked what I saw
so I have decided to go with them.

i have used speednames.com, which is terribly incompetent, expensive but
does its job, gratisdns.dk which is superb in their area (privates) and
hosteurope.de, which give you access to their robot via email - nice for
lots of domains. hosteurope also has excellent support - almost
exclusively in german though. eurodns.com has been recommended to me by
some people already and i might check them out in the near future.

kind regards
Thilo

I can support the recommendation, we use them for our european domains
and are happy with their service and response level.

The only downside I can think of is that they keep requesting to send a
sales-rep to talk to us about expanding our use of their services.
However no one has showed up since be keep politely telling them we
don't want to talk to him/her.
