Im putting together a machine with Pentium D 945 CPU. Apparently, this is
a dual-core chip with EM64T, so my question is, which install CD would I
use? Is there one for "EM64T" machines or is that not supported yet?
Im assuming for dual-cores I can just enable SMP in the kernel config?

use the amd64 Gentoo release. it works for both AMD (Athlon64/
Opteron) and Intel EM64T.

you sure can!

What about ia64?

IA64 is a different architecture and is implemented AFAIK only in Intel's Itanium product line (or whats left of it)...

That's itanium.

I noticed there were kernel config options for EM64T, AMD64 and "generic
x86-64" - should I just stick to "generic"?
BTW, this box can also take Core 2 Duo chips - would anything change if I
upgraded CPU?

I would use EM64T (as that's for intel cpu's).
Also enable the multicore-scheduler option under smp (available with newer
kernels...).

I'm not sure about that...but it looks like a core 2 duo is better than a
pentium-d. But that's just a guess, as I'm not too familiar with those cpu's.

Hi,
I have a Pentium D 930 and I use amd64 ISO images. Compiled kernel
with EM64T and SMP options. It works great. Don't know for
multicore-scheduler options? I suppose when enabled will recognize 4
CPU's?

Same here.

Sorry to disappoint you but the non-EE (read extreme edition) versions
of Pentium D don't have hyperthreading. For server workloads this is not
a big deal though, AFAIK mysql for example performs worse with HT enabled.
cheers

I use -nocona for my core2 duo chips, with em64t kernel and amd64 images.
