I know that the QLogic HBAs have built-in Multipathing support with enabled drivers (these should be availible from IBM or QLogic). This would prevent you from configuring Multipathing on OS level, thus making everything a bit easier. This I would recommend.

Im using QLogic HBAs with HP BL and DL Servers and they work fine under linux.
With IBM HBAs I have no experience. They might work as well or even better.

It will be an IBM x346, but we are not sure about the HBAs. We can
choose between IBM Total Storage DS4000 or with Qlogig HBAs. Any
Suggestions?

Hi Simon.

Your right. SecurePath is proprietary and expensive. And it is not needed any more for linux. HP has integrated some of the SecurePath features into Qlogics drivers with integrated Multipathing suport. These drivers can be downloaded from the HP site freely (well... read the license ;-) ). They come in two parts. One is an rpm containing some useful fc utilities, the second is a source-rpm containg the driversource. As for Gentoo, you have to find a way to extract the binaries and source from rpm (rpm2tar?).

I tested and currently use these drivers with SLES9 to connect to EVA-3000 and EVA-4000 storage. Works perfectly for both, wich makes me confident it might work with other storage systems as well, since EVA-4000 doesn't require any SecurePath like software. Maybe I can do a test with a VA7410 before I have to give it back.

I hope to get my hands on a gentoo test as soon as possible.

Hi Matthias,

which driver do you mean? SecurePath? As far as I know HP ships SecurePath as
RPM and without sourcecode. And SecurePath only works with kernel 2.4.

Simon
