Hi all,
I'm looking for a secure, fast FTP server to authenticate against an
LDAP backend. I've narrowed it down to these from portage:
vsftpd
pure-ftpd
proftpd
Can anyone recommend one over the other?
thanks

I've recently moved from proftpd to pure-ftpd, because pure-ftpd offers a
virtual chroot feature, which I find very useful.

Why not vsftpd? I always preferred proftpd until I discovered vsftpd.
It's incredibly secure for an ftp server, very fast, and easily
configurable with so many options. I especially like the ease and
flexibility with which you can configure bandwidth limitations.

quoting myself: " pure-ftpd has plenty of other features you might not need
but still find usefull for the feature: virtual users, authentication
against mysql, secure login in various modes, etc, etc" :)
i guess it comes between these two, you should read more in the forums and
decide for yourself based on YOUR needs.
i am running pure myself but i have no experience with others, as pure has
served me very well so far.
good luck

Personally I prefer vsftpd for anonymous FTP serving, and pure-ftpd for FTP
serving, where user authentication service needed.
So,
vsftpd - anonymous FTP server;
pure-ftpd - FTP server, which serves users;

Not sure what you mean, but Im using proftpd, authenticating out of a
MySQL database and I have it set to jail users in their home dirs (they
can't move up, only down).

Yes, but if you have symlinked something like
~user/sites/<site> to /var/www/<site> then they can't access it.
In pureftpd, whist they won't be able to access ~user/.. , they can follow the
symlink out. Proftpd cannot do this.

All the sites on my web server are under /home so I dont need any
symlinks.
