* [gentoo-science] [sage-on-gentoo] Cannot install sage-doc: insufficient memory

  Hello!
I have been experiencing a problem trying to install sage-doc for
several months. I have 2GB of RAM on my laptop, and it turns out not
sufficient to build Sage documentation. Each time it fails with a
message "Cannot allocate memory". I use Xfce, so the system itself does
not consume too much memory. Therefore I do not understand if this is a
sage-doc problem or not.

  Regards,
    Vladimir

sage-doc is really memory hungry, however I would be glad if you
were pasting more details of the failure.
If it is a real problem we’ll go back to pre-built sage-doc for stable
releases.

I can provide some more details if it helps. I just do not know
exactly what kind of details are informative in this case.

Hi Vladimir,

Can you tell me: How many threads you are using (-j??)
and whether you have swap enabled on that machine.

I usually use a single thread in make.conf (-j1). I also have a 1 GB of
swap space enabled.

According to upstream it all should be enough (there was a thread not so long ago
on sage-devel I am sure).
We must be doing something slightly differently. In any case, while it is nice
to have it building most people probably prefer the binary version. We only
started to use it for normal release because that official binaries for the doc
was so late we couldn’t release stable ebuilds for sage 6.2.

I will see what we could do.

I think it would also be very nice to have some USE-flags for the
sage-doc package in order not to build all the documentation for all
the languages. It takes about 1.3GB on my PC which seems too much, as
for me. Is it possible to organize a kind of "selective build" with the
corresponding USE-flags?

I am definitely giving some thought on that but nothing concrete
so far. Upstream is not managing it at all so any solution will be our
own work.

And if I understand correctly, sage depends on sage-doc, so the
sage-doc is not even an optional package. Am I right?

You understand correctly. However a minimal install can be done
with USE=“-html -pdf” it shouldn’t require much resources.

Although studying the whole thing again recently I think it may
be made optional.

Here is the upstream thread for gory details but your set up is supposed
to be enough, if it isn't we are doing something that a rather nasty impact.

As of today we have sage-doc and sage-doc-bin in the overlay for sage 6.4. By
default sage-doc-bin is the only one keyworded.
For development/beta/rc work (sage*-9999 ebuilds) only sage-doc is the only
possibility as upstream do not provide pre-built doc for these.
There is usually a lag between upstream release and the availability of
pre-build doc, so early adopters will always have to build their own
docs.

Making building the doc the default was motivated by the failure by sage
upstream to provide pre-build doc for a long time for sage 6.2.
