Yep, there's a way to build it so that it uses libGL rather than trying to use libMesaGL or something silly like that -- in fact, there are binaries on their site that do exactly that already, and our ebuild also does it. The only thing you need to do on Gentoo to use a different libGL is switch your OpenGL implementation using opengl-update.
