Hi François, and all of You,

I tried your fix despite it has been removed (i copied from commits), and although the 
command running gap during sage install
/usr/libexec/gap/gap -m 32m -l /usr/share/gap -r -b -T -o 9999G /var/tmp/portage/sci-
mathematics/sage-4.3.4/image/opt/sage/data//extcode/gap/sage.g

has no -p option inside, it still hangs for me...

Can anyone tell me what this command is intended to do?

my compilation seems to lack gap/sage.g:

Hi Marek,

IT could very well be that this command is intended to generate the sage.g 
file. We are still investigating what goes wrong for you. -p seem to strip some
formatting from gap it looks weird with it but it does have an effect even if 
it is undocumented. 
Do you have any "locale" set on your machine? Have tried to build sage the 
normal way - ie as recommended by the sage dev and if so, was it successful?

Never mind. The penny finally dropped.
You don't have a file:
/var/tmp/portage/sci-
mathematics/sage-4.3.4/image/opt/sage/data//extcode/gap/sage.g

because sage/data//extcode/gap/sage.g is shipped in sage-extcode.
So it is not there. Why it works for most of us and not for you is weird.
I am not about to emerge --debug to find out in all the gory details
anyone feel free to have a go. Anyway I will try to ship a fix soon for you 
to try.

Thanks for another fix.... but... it doesn't work either;-)

Now emerge sage runs 
/usr/libexec/gap/gap -m 32 -l /usr/share/gap -r -b -p -T -o 9999G 
/opt/sage/data//extcode/gap/sage.g

as it should (sage.g IS in the place), but install waits forever.

running it by hand gives:
marek-laptop marek # /usr/libexec/gap/gap -m 32 -l /usr/share/gap -r -b -p -T -o 9999G 
/opt/sage/data//extcode/gap/sage.g 
@p1.gap: cannot extend the workspace any more

at the moment I emerged -C gap and I am emerging gap once again

Hi Marek,

Once gap has emerged I want you to try the following command:
/usr/libexec/gap/gap -m 32m -l /usr/share/gap -r -b -p -T -o 3900m 
/opt/sage/data//extcode/gap/sage.g

It looks like the problem may be that sage is trying to use gap with
too much memory for your computer. It tries to use the settings
for a 64bits set up - whether or not you have one, let's see what 
happens with the 32bits set up.
If you still get the message about extending the workspace, could 
you also try "-m 8m" and may be "-o 1024" or something.

sorry for no response for such a long period of time, but I am preoccupied with my Masters 
at the time...

so i tried this command, now it outputs this strange sequence of signs:

emerge =sci/mathematics/sage-4.3.5 still fails at the same moment...
