I am sorry if this is the wrong list to post this, but gentoo bugzilla seems even less appropriate?. I keep getting the attached install error from sage from sage-on-gentoo. (Warning: 12MB uncompressed!) Is that a known problem, and how do I get around it? More generally, what is the preferred way to report errors/successes/improvements ffor this overlay? Creating another mailing list might seem appropriate but it scatters a thin crowd even more. It doesn't look like the science mailing list is so busy that the conversation you're having is a problem. Actually it makes it look alive. That said, bugs should go to bugzilla for a number of reasons. Bugzilla allows more than just reporting, which is what Peter just did. It also allows people to track issues, cooperate, follow-up on the fixes etc... You can attach pretty big reports to bugs. In case your attachment was too big you might want to try and reduce it (or compress it more), or host it somewhere else. Although in the latter case there's always a chance that your file may vanish in the long run and that's suboptimal. Denis. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 11+ messages in thread

Yes I know what you mean by "thin crowd" and "make it look alive". My idea for a mailing list in this case would also be to invite people working on a similar line in other distros to try to foster collaboration. I am not completely sure that's a good idea but I know there are a few other people packaging sage on distros and our voices are not necessarily caring much weight individually. You don't need -momit-leaf-frame-pointer when you have -fomit-frame-pointer. The latter does what the former does and more. It's almost certainly not what's causing your problem though. Have you also tried to install sage-4.3.3 the traditional way? That is getting the sources from sagemath.org and going "make install" on them. At this stage it would be good to know if that works so we can figure out if it is a sage bug or a sage-on-gentoo bug. Note that you don't have to download sage-4.3.3.tar as it should already be in your distfiles. Francois ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 11+ messages in thread

Python from portage did the trick. I don't know why I never tried that, I guess because I thought if there's a version in the overlay it will have some stuff patched in which is required by sage. Abyway If you can think of something I can do to narrow down the problem with the overlay version let me know. Now I shall test out my brand new sage install! Yes it does have stuff required by sage. However the current python-2.6.4-r99 is based on python-2.6.4 not 2.6.4-r1. When I tried to bump to r1 it caused problems for a number of people. If it is now working I will bump it. Thanks for trying that. Francois ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 11+ messages in thread
